Mwalwanda is dead. Speaker of Parliament
Catherine Gotani Hara has confirmed the development.
“All Members of Parliament and staff will be updated on the program once consultations with the authorities and family are complete,” reads part of her statement.
Dr. Mwalwanda recently disclosed that he had tested
positive for the novel COVID – 19 pandemic.
According to Hara, the Karonga Central Legislator has passed on at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
Malawi’s COVID – 19 official caseload currently stands at 2716 with 51 deaths. This is according to Thursday’s national update of the global health pandemic by the Ministry of Health.
The former Finance Minister was a trade and development specialist. He obtained his PhD in Economics- International Trade and Finance in 1979 from the University of Toronto in Canada. Among other roles, Dr. Mwalwanda once served as Principal Advisor and Head of ECA Geneva Office – United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), a position he held for over 6 years.
Until the announcement of his dealth late Thursday evening, Dr. Mwalwanda was Director of Economic
Affairs Directorate for the governing Malawi Congress Party – MCP.
