Lack of water and poor sanitation is affecting the fight against COVID-19 at Mwanza district main
market, authorities have said.
This was observed during the distribution of masks to vendors at the market, an initiative that was
organised by UTM youth in the district.
Speaking to Metro Chairperson for the Presidential Campaign Team for UTM, Felix Njawala said
Government will make sure that water is available in the market so as to make the fight against the
pandemic a reality.
Washing hands with clean water is one the WHO requirements in the fight against the corona virus.
According to health experts washing hands regularly has a possibility of preventing the spread of the
virus.
However, this is not possible at the market because for the past three years the market has been
experiencing low water supply or prolonged dry taps.
Chairperson for the market, Divaison Zidala, said the development is compromising the good sanitation
drive in the market, adding that the pandemic has worsened the situation.
On masks distributed by UTM, Zidala was over the moon and said he would make sure that every vendor plying business in the market puts on a mask.
Njawala said he will report the issue to relevant authorities so that the market is supplied with water. He said though water plays a bigger role in the COVID-19 fight, masks were also important hence the party thought it wise to distribute them.
