Malawi has been elected into the 47 member United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council for the period between 2021-2023 after amassing 180 of 190 votes by the voting member states.
Making the announcement in Lilongwe Monday, Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo described the election as a “mark of extreme competence on our part (Malawi) and confidence in us from the member states that voted for us.
And 180 votes of 190 is a strong indicator of the same.” Through membership of the Council, Malawi will, among others, have the responsibility of sponsoring Human Rights UN resolutions and monitoring
Human Rights violations in UN member states.
