Nkhata Bay police have on Friday 23 October arrested two men for damaging the newly constructed Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay M5 road at Liphasa bridge on Wednesday.
The suspects, Solomon Kasambara 34, of Chakwera village Traditional Authority (TA) Kilipula in Karonga District, and Tesemu Mwenda 20, of Timbiri village TA Timbiri in Nkhata Bay District.
According to Nkhata Bay police publicist, Kondwani James the two suspects and two others were on Wednesday 21 October, 2020 found digging quarry stones from the edges of the road ready to be transported to Chinguluwe trading center for construction.
“They were spotted by police officers who accompanied the Magistrate on the way to Mzenga for court,” James said.
James also said upon sensing that the act can expose the road to extensive damage as the rainy season approaches, the police officers made an effort to arrest the suspects.
He added that the two of the suspects escaped the place.
“The offence of intentionally endangering safety of persons travelling by rail or road contravening section 237 (b) of the Penal Code has since been leveled against the two culprits in custody,” he said.
He further said the two suspects will appear in court soon.
“The motor vehicle registration number BX9476 two tonne half filled with quarry stones has been detained at the station for court exhibition. Efforts to arrest the other culprits are underway,” he added.
Police in the district are therefore advising community members to be patriotic citizens and take leading role of protecting public property.
