Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera is set to launch “National Clean-up Day on November 11, 2020 at Chinsapo ground at 08:30 am in the capital Lilongwe.
The initiative aims at contributing to cleanliness and greening of the country while instilling a culture of environmental behavioral change among citizens.
The public will afternoon of second Fridays of every month from 14:00 hours to 17:00 hour (three hours) designed to clean up their locations.
Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources in collaboration with Local Government ministry will be championing the initiatives in councils.
Addressing the news conference in the capital Lilongwe on Friday, November 6, 2020 Natural Resources Minister Nancy Tembo says Malawians are encouraged to take part in various cleaning up and greening activities of their surroundings including markets, offices, open space, beaches, industries, business places, schools, hospitals, streets, home and among others.
Tembo disclosed that will be vigorous mechanism in councils to make sure that the initiative is implemented successful.
She added that President Chakwera will be participating in the exercise monthly to signify the importance of the initiative towards environmental conservation including waste management.
“National Clean-up Day will address the problems associated with indiscriminate waste disposal including pollution, clogging and damage to storm drains, release of greenhouse gases and toxic fumes, and reduce breeding ground for disease-causing pathogens.
“Following the launch, the general public, led by various society leaders will start clean-up starting activities from Friday, November 13, 2020 from 2 pm to 5 pm and continue with the practice in subsequent months” says Minister.
Tembo appeals; ” Government is therefore urging all able Malawians to participate in the clean-up activities of their surroundings and desist from littering and indiscriminate disposal of waste that we all live in a clean and healthy environment”.
The initiative is under the theme; “A clean Environment: My Right, My Responsibility”.
