Police in Dowa have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly stealing his grandmother’s national identity card.
The suspect Ziyabu Jafali committed the offence on Monday this week, November 9 2020 at Mandala Village where he allegedly stole a national identity card belonging to his grandmother Cholingilira Chilembwe.
It is reported that on Monday this week, the suspect’s grandmother went to a nearby village where there was a funeral ceremony.
The suspect, who is also a grandson to the victim took advantage of the absence of his grandmother and entered into her house and stole a national identity card which is also on a list of beneficiaries of affordable input programme (AIP).
The suspect immediately went to sell the national identity card to a certain man within the village at a price of K20 000 but not cash.
The grandmother after discovering the missing of her national identity card, she reported the matter to community policing members who arrested the suspect and brought him to police.
Upon receipt of the matter, police instituted investigations leading to the arrest of the suspect and recovered the national identity card.
Jafali, who comes from Mandala Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa District, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of theft.
