The Immigration Department at Mwanza border on Sunday detained a bus carrying 97 Malawian returnees from South Africa with fake Covid-19 negative certificates.
The department’s Mwanza border spokesperson, Pasqually Zulu, confirmed that a bus belonging to Delta Coaches, has been detained as well as its host who has been arrested for violating Covid-19 gazetted guidelines.
Zulu says the bus company had no authorization from Malawi Embassy in Pretoria to carry returnees to Malawi.
The bus’ details indicated that there were 29 passengers on board but physical counting during border checks established that there were 97 Malawian returnees -57 men, 23 women and 17 minors.
Meanwhile, 11 buses have arrived in the country, two others are on their way, bringing home a total of 733 returnees.
