About 100 street children from Blantyre City yesterday got a rare treat when Prince Barbershops cut their hair and motivated them to leave the streets.
The exercise, which took place along Haile Selassie Road in Blantyre central business district, had the blessing of Blantyre City Council.
Prince shaves a street kid In a letter dated May 20 2021, the council said: “Permission has been granted to your barbershop to offer free haircuts to the homeless on the street on Thursday May 20 2021 from 10am to 1pm.”
In his remarks, Prince Barbershops executive director Prince Butani said he introduced the initiative as part of his company’s corporate social responsibility. “We have received massive support from Malawians in Blantyre and Lilongwe. So, we are giving back to society,” he said.
Blantyre City social welfare officer Stephano Joseph welcomed the exercise, saying it can motivate the children to go back home.
During the exercise, Covid-19 precautionary measures were adhered to.
Blantyre has about 1 700 street children.
