Police in Salima district have seized 329 litres of fuel in an operation dubbed “landa zigubu” and have arrested two men for allegedly being found in possession of locomotive fuel without a license.
Salima Police Spokesperson, Jacob Khembo has identified the two as Jamusani White, 54, from Machokola village Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje district and Alick Bomba, 35 from Zidyani village,Traditional Authority Mwanza in Salima district.
He said, in the early morning of 7th October 2022, the station officer and his team carried out the ‘landa zigubu’ operation around Kamuzu road, Kaphatenga and Salima boma which led to the arrest of the two.
“The two were found in possession of twelve 20litre jelly cans, five 9litre jelly cans, seven 2litre jelly cans, fifteen 1litre jelly cans, twelve half litre containers plus extra seventeen 20litre containers which were empty,” said Khembo.
The operation is being carried out to decongest filling stations, where fuel is available and to further restrict vendors from carrying out the business which is prohibited by Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) and is only allowed for customers with fuel bulk purchase permit.
Police in the district are therefore appealing to motorists to stop buying fuel from unauthorised vendors as the system may put their vehicles at risk.
