Some chiefs under the banner Tumbuka Cultural Centre have disclosed plans to hold celebrations in remembrance of Chikulamayembe the 12th whose real name was Walter Gondwe.
The celebration, to be held from September 22 to 23, 2023, comes five years after the demise of Gondwe in 2018.
The group says they have been failing to hold the event due to chieftaincy wrangles that have been there in the Nkhamanga kingdom in recent years.
Chairperson of the organising committee Stanly Chimduzi Gondwe said in an interview that the celebrations will start with prayers at the late Chikulamayembe’s graveyard.
Later, cultural dances, recounting of history, beer drinking and other events will make major highlights at Bolero in Rumphi District.
The celebration, pegged at K7.5 million, comes at a time when the current royal clan is organising the Gonapamuhanya celebration on September 30 this year.
“We will send a delegation to invite them, if they want to come it’s up to them,” Gondwe said.
