The Malawi Police Service has registered 38
electoral related cases of violence with 46 arrests
made so far across the country throughout the
electoral period.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Noel Kaira in charge of security on behalf of the Malawi Electoral Commission during elections explained to Malawi Metro.
He says this took place before and beyond the
voting process and counting exercise. According to Kaira, so far the police has recorded two cases on intimidation of monitors, five cases of malicious damage, four cases of attempts to use others voter ID, a single isolated cases of intending to vote on another person’s behalf, two cases of bribery, two cases of attempts to disrupt the electoral process and destroy tally centre.
The police have also recorded seven cases of conduct likely to cause breach of peace, twelve cases of assault and two of being found with dangerous weapons among others.
Kaira has since commended the Malawi Police
Service, the Malawi Defense Force and the general
public for being on top of things to ensure a peaceful and violent free election.
“Most of these incidents were disrupted before they even took place. This is so because our intelligence
(Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defense Force) was on top of things and managed to resolve them away from their intended destinations,” elaborated Kaira.
He adds that the country’s security agents remain
fully charged and on standby in case of any incidents that might disturb peace. Security commentator retired Brigadier Marcel Chirwa, has commended the country’s security agencies for effectively discharging their duties this election week.
“There has been calm and peace throughout the process. This only shows that they planned and
executed well. Especially on the arrests made and
how the issues are being resolved. It is a job well done,” says Chirwa.
The 46 will remain in police custody until elections
are over when the police will attend to their respective cases.
