Director of the Civil Society Education Coalition Benedicto Kondowe has considered views on reopening of schools by the government ahead of Covid 19 period saying it should be done gradually with priority of high stake grades such as standard 8, form 4, IGSCE and final year students in colleges and Universities as this will allow the institutions to implement the safety measures of the pandemic and assess their effectiveness.
According to Kondowe, with local transmission and recent spike in Covid 19 cases, there is a need to sure we reopen responsibly to test the measure with a small group for a month before other cohort could be invited and also there should be concrete commitment from government to support the schools with safety materials.
Meanwhile , the state President of the Republic of Malawi Dr Lazarus Chakwera says in a 4th weekly public address that schools will be reopened in the first week of September this year after meeting preventive measures .
It is now 8 months since all schools were closed in March this year as one way to prevent further spread of Covid 19 in the country.
