His Excellency President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is expected to present his first ever Statement Of National Address (SONA) tomorrow, September 4,2020 as he will be opening the 2020/2021 budget meeting for the Members of Parliament.
Meanwhile, there is growing expectations among Malawians and donor partners on the SONA by President Chakwera who has confirmed of live address at Parliament building from 9 o’clock in the morning.
Among other things, Malawians are expecting the President to include in his address policies that his government will use to develop Malawi; developmental activities that his administration has lined up in the budget to change Malawi for better and solutions that the Tonse government has to the problems currently facing this nation.
For instance, the issue of hunger whereby over 2.6 million households are estimated to be hit; the issue of agricultural intensification, irrigation farming, cheap farm inputs etc to improve food security for the nation and possibly turn Malawi into food basket for other countries.
Expectations are also high on reintroduction of the JCE examinations to improve the standard of education in the country. The issue to do with lapsing security in the country and how to bring the lost trust of people in the Police Service; issues of economy which has dwindled unexpectedly in the past 5 years and made worse with the coming of Covid-19 pandemic. Road network is another area many expect the presidential address to tackle, with the M1 road topping the agenda along side many other areas which need improved road network, Malawians are not short of expections in the address on trade and industry as it can be one area for job creation.
Will the address include measures to U nite the broken Malawi, will it highlight how Malawians will start P rospering together, will president Chakwera hit on how his administration will E nd corruption, will he mention the need for every citizen to abide by the R ule of Law?
All what Malawians are expecting is that he will emphasize on the need for authorities to implement the much awaited Servant leadership to the citizenry and surely it is a SONA fully packed with expectations from every citizen and indeed it can even be termed as a pivot to keep stagnant or excel.
