A 25-year-old man is in police custody at Dowa Police Station for allegedly being found in possession of fake money amounting to K72 000.
The suspect, Emmanuel Chipokosa of Chinyama Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa committed the offence on Friday evenings at Dzaleka Refugee Camp Market in Dowa District.
It is alleged that on the particular evening, the suspect went to an Airtel money shop belonging to a 17-year-old Congolese national Malipo Bymungu to send amounting to K20 000 to his relative in Lilongwe.
The victim (Malipo Byamungu) sent the money and received K2000 notes amounting to K20 000 from the suspect.
Upon receipt of the money (cash), the victim realized that it was fake notes. He then immediately informed police who rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect.
When the suspect was thoroughly searched, he was found with fake money in his pocket all totaling to K72 000 in K2000 notes.
Police have since seized the money.
The suspect will appear before court soon to answer a charge of selling articles bearing designs in imitation of currency
