The Human rights defenders coalition (HRDC) has asked president Lazarus Chakwera to reverse a decision of increasing salaries and monthly allowances for MPs by 100%.
Leaders of HRDC made the call during their engagement with president Chakwera.
With the revision in monthly allowances, members of parliament are now porketing 2.2 Million kwacha from 1.1 Million kwacha monthly per month.
According to Luke Tembo, National coordinator for HRDC saying the decision to raise salaries for MPs has come at a wrong time and inconsiderate considering that alot of malawians are facing challenges including hunger.
Tembo has also asked Government to justify the hike and why perks for other civil servants have only gotten a small margin.
