Covid-19 is on exponential rise and we need to take stricter measures. The number of positive cases registered in January alone was 17,380, out of 23,963, representing 72% of total number of cases since the first positive case was recorded in April 2020.
The number of deaths recorded in January alone was 513 out of 702 representing 73% of all deaths recorded since April 2020.
Positive cases in some schools where tests were done on students e.g. Lilongwe Girls Secondary school were around 50% or more, showing a higher rate of infection.
There were also sporadic reports of teachers dying from COVID 19 complications, demonstrating that teachers are more vulnerable to the pandemic.
Let’s balance the right to education with the right to life. Let schools reopen with assurance of maximum protection of both teachers and students from contracting the corona virus.
In the past 24 hours, Malawi has registered 546 new COVID-19 cases, 296 new recoveries, 35 new deaths. Of the new case 542 are locally transmitted: 188 from Lilongwe, 153 from
Blantyre, 100 from Mzimba North, 19 from Karonga, 11 from Dowa, 10 from Mangochi, eight from Kasungu, six each from Mulanje, Phalombe, and Zomba, four each from Mchinji, Mwanza, Ntcheu, Salima, and Thyolo, three each from Chiradzulu, Machinga, and Nkhotakota, two from Chitipa, and one each from Balaka, Dedza, Mzimba South, and Nsanje districts while four of the new cases are imported: three are new arrivals at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa, and one was identified at Mwanza border and is a resident of Mzimba South district.
In the past 24 hours, 35 new COVID-19 deaths have been registered: 18 from Blantyre, five
from Lilongwe, three from Kasungu, two each from Mzimba South and Dowa, and one each from Mzimba North, Zomba, Nkhotakota, Machinga, and Salima Districts. Our hearts go out to families that have lost loved ones due to COVID-19. May you find peace, hope and love during these difficult times.
Cumulatively, Malawi has recorded 25,449 cases including 761 deaths (Case Fatality Rate is at 2.99%). Of these cases, 1,964 are imported infections and 23,475 are locally transmitted.
Cumulatively, 9,814 cases have now recovered, 134 were lost to follow-up, and 76 are still being investigated to ascertain their outcome.
This brings the total number of active cases to 14,664. In the past 24 hours, 59 cases were
admitted while 26 were discharged from various treatment centers. Currently, a total of 260 active cases are admitted: 78 in Lilongwe, 76 in Blantyre, 20 in Mzimba North, 12 in Zomba, seven each in Dowa and Ntcheu, six each in Karonga, Nkhotakota, Mchinji, and Kasungu, five in Mulanje, four each in Mzimba South and Chitipa, three each in Thyolo and Machinga.
