Vice President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima on Wednesday continued with his tour of development projects and reform meetings with council officials in the Northern Region.
Chilima first inspected the 78.5 kilometre Njakwa-Livingstonia Road project which commenced in 2016.
During the project briefing, Roads Authority and Roads Fund Administration officials said the project, which was initially supposed to be completed by May, 2020 is set for completion by November, 2021.
Chilima also inspected Rumphi Teachers Training College construction work where the contractor, SR Nicholas, said delays in funding and the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down progress in the second phase of the project.
“One of the major challenges the project has faced is delays in funding. Of course the issue of COVID -19 has also affected our operations as we had to downsize our workforce to observe physical distancing,” said Glanluca Bizzaro, the contractor’s representative.
The Vice President also inspected the 260 km Rumphi- Nyika-Nthalire- Chitipa Road Project, which had stalled.
In his remarks after the tour, Chilima said Government is committed to completing all projects that were started, so they can benefit Malawians.
“The Rumphi via Nyika-Nthalire to Chitipa Road is one of the 15 strategic flagship projects that the Tonse Administration identified to be upgraded from the current earth to bitumen status due to their economic importance.
“Since this project is being funded by our own resources as a country, you will bear with us that this project will take a little longer to be completed,” he said.
He concluded his day by inspecting Mzuzu University Library construction before meeting Mzuzu City Council officials at Mzuzu Hotel on reforms.
