Police in Nkhotakota have arrested two people on suspicion that they are involved in robbery and breaking offences at Grand View Lodge in the district.
The two, who hail from Mzimba district, were arrested on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Mkaika adhorc roadblock and Sani Village respectively.
They have been identified as Anthony Banda, 28, of Chagunda Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chagunda and Happy Gondwe, 42, of Zolozolo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mbelwa.
It is reported that on the wee hours of July 19, 2020, the above mentioned suspects, armed with panga knives, invaded the lodge and broke into five rooms.
They tied the watchmen and attacked customers in the rooms, and went away with four different laptops, eight different cellphones and other assorted items worth millions and cash amounting to K400,000. The value of the stolen property being K2,746,000.
The matter was reported to Nkhotakota Police Station and the scene of crime was visited.
Investigations were instituted whereby one suspect was arrested at Mkaika adhorc roadblock and the second one arrested in the forest of Sani Village in the district.
Upon being interrogated, they admitted to have been behind the criminal syndicate.
Police managed to recover the following items; seven different cellphones, assorted clothes and some other properties worth thousands of kwachas. The value of the recovered properties not yet known as investigations are under way.
Some of the stolen items have been positively identified by the owner.
The two have since been charged with robbery, breaking into a building and committing a felony therein, and theft. They will appear in court soon to answer charges leveled against them.
Police in the district is assuring the general public of their safety and will not relent until all culprits are tracked down and put to book.
