MultiChoice Malawi says it will challenge in court penalties which the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has levelled against it for adjusting Digital Satellite Television (DStv) tariffs without prior approval from the regulator.
MACRA Director General, Daud Suleman, in a letter written to MultiChoice on 27 December, 2022, conveys that the pay TV provider should credit its customers back the money it charged on adjusted bouquet and publish the same in local press.
Daud further orders MultiChoice Malawi to pay K10 million fine to the Authority within 30 days.
However, MultiChoice Malawi Corporate Affairs Manager, Zena Makunje, says they only collect the subscription for DStv on behalf of MultiChoice Africa Holdings.
“MACRA is therefore, penalising MultiChoice Malawi for a service that is not ours, for prices we do not set and attempting to impose conditions which the law does not prescribe,” says Makunje in a statement.
